What a skills assessment is

A skills assessment is an independent check that your training and work experience match the standard of your trade in the country you want to move to. For most trade visas it comes before the visa itself.

In Australia, Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) and VETASSESS assess most trades. In New Zealand, licensed trades such as electricians and plumbers need registration with the trade board.

How to get ready

1. Gather proof of your work

Payslips, employment letters with your duties, tax records and photos of your work all help.

2. Check your training

A trade certificate (for example NSDA or NTVQF) shortens the experience you need. Without one, plan for more years of work or a training course first.

3. Prepare for the practical test

Many assessments include a practical test at an approved centre. Your counsellor tells you which centre and when.
