Section 01

Prepare together before you go

Children cope best when they know what to expect. Look at photos of the new school and neighbourhood together, and talk about what will be the same as well as what will change.

1. Keep familiar routines

Bedtimes, meals and favourite activities give children a sense of security during the move.

2. Practise the basics

A few phrases in the local language, or the school's daily timetable, can make the first day less daunting.

Section 02

The first term at school

  • Meet the class teacher early and share anything that helps them support your child.
  • Ask about buddy programmes for new students.
  • Encourage one after-school activity to help your child make friends.

Expect some ups and downs: settling in usually takes a full term.
