Writing a Statement of Purpose That Stands Out

A good statement of purpose is specific, honest and well organised. Here is a simple structure that works.

Your statement of purpose

Section 01

A simple structure

1. Your motivation

Open with what draws you to the subject, using a real experience rather than a general statement.

2. Your preparation

Explain how your studies and experience have prepared you for this course.

3. Why this course and university

Mention specific subjects, research or facilities that match your goals.

4. Your goals

Finish with what you plan to do after graduating and how the course gets you there.

Be specific. A panel remembers the student who explains exactly why this course, at this university, fits their plans.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying a template or someone else's statement.
  • Listing achievements without explaining what you learned.
  • Writing too much about your childhood and too little about your plans.

Ask your counsellor to review a draft: a fresh pair of eyes always helps.
